The thrilling woes of that thing called 'love story'

It's the only off note in this otherwise irresistible anthology of 27 love stories sure to make hearts flutter well beyond Valentine's Day. My Mistress's Sparrow Is Dead was edited by Eugenides at Dave Eggers's behest, to benefit the Chicago chapter of 826 National, his writing programs for teens, a cause as worthy as amour.

Eugenides's point is that love stories – as opposed to love itself – thrive on obstructions: sparrows, dead or alive. As he explains in his introduction, they "depend on disappointment" and "nearly without exception, give love a bad name." What he doesn't mention is that reading love stories thrillingly combines the pleasures of prurience and schadenfreude.

Unlike Zadie Smith, who commissioned new stories by hip young writers for "The Book of Other People," her anthology for Eggers's literacy project, Eugenides sought suggestions rather than submissions from contemporary authors.

10/30: Q100 needs more letters/ Keyshia Cole By Rodney Ho | Tuesday, October 30, 2007, 06:53 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Q100's Bert Show has fallen about 75,000 letters short of its goal to reach 375,000 hand-written thank you letters for U.S. overseas troops in time for Thanksgiving. They will likely start to send out letters soon anyway, guaranteeing fighting men and women in battle zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan will get letters for sure. But the station would still like to hit 375K and is giving listeners another day or two to get pen and paper out.

Host Bert Weiss said he was frustrated they didn't reach the goal but he's hoping people will rally and finish up the final 75,000 by Wednesday.

Berlusconi redux?

ITALIAN heads of state have only limited powers. But one of them is the enviable ability to drive would-be prime ministers into an agony of frustrated expectations.

Ever since the fall of Romano Prodi's centre-left government, which lost a vote of confidence in the Senate on January 24th, Italy has had, in effect, a hung parliament. There is a centre-left majority in the lower house, the Chamber of Deputies. But the confidence vote that toppled Mr Prodi's 20-month-old administration showed it to be four votes short of the necessary majority in the Senate.

Gender Change Costs Dean a Job

The legal point is the quality of the medical opinion that the gender confusion is a medically recognized condition beyond Julie's control as WSS explains above.

Also, the fact that Julie's spouse of 35 years accepted the change is a material fact.

The arguments the religious institution may put forth pale by comparison. This is neither a legal nor religious argument, but a medical one. Neither the religious nor the jurists bring any special knowledge to the table.

Right from wrong will be resolved on the facts of the case, not the school, Julie or Barnabee's opinion. The scripture quotes or other religious basis Barnabee waits for are irrelevant. But that does explain why a PR firm rather than lawyers are handling the School's responses.

Some other legal items of note are: the school is estopped to deny ability after years on the job, positive performance reviews, need to educate the school and the public about fairness and the difference between the First Amendment right to an individual's right to freedom of religion and the prohibition against organized abuse in the name of religion.
