How money and policing are rebuilding East Hills

Not every resident is pleased with this zero-tolerance approach.

Sharon Fields, who attended the recent agency-head meeting, complains that security is heavy-handed. But she herself was arrested in October by Pittsburgh police.

According to an incident report, officers had approached a young man in a hoodie on a warm night because they thought he was suspicious. Ms. Fields started swearing at them about harassing the man, police said, and ended up spending 12 hours in jail on a disorderly conduct charge.

Some residents also complain about "shoddy" construction of the units and chafe at the regulations imposed by management.

But Ms. Baylock, of CT Management, says the complaints are the result of a lack of enforcement in years past.

Rio's Decadent Days in Full Swing

Carnival! The very word arouses images of semi-naked dancers, breathtaking floats and days filled with decadence.

Throughout Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, people take over the streets with their own small samba dancing blocks. Costumes, music and dancing, and a general feeling of organized chaos, permeates the city.

The Shrink's Progress

ORINDA, Calif. -- Debbie, a 17-year-old now down to 86 pounds and ever closer to her secret goal of 81 pounds, slowly awoke in her bed on a hospital intensive care unit. She was so groggy from her drug overdose that the only thing she noticed was the painful burning sensation in her nose.

She then discovered that she couldn't move her hands to rub the unpleasant sensation away. Debbie had survived her suicide attempt and finally figured out that padded leather restraints secured her wrists and ankles to the sides of the bed. The burning sensation came from a tube that had been inserted through her nose down into her stomach.

The tube had been used initially to pump out whatever pill fragments in Debbie's stomach had not been absorbed before she reached the hospital. After monitoring her for awhile the medical doctor decided that because her nutritional condition was so precarious, the nasogastric tube would be used for feeding Debbie's malnourished body.

Hominy & Hash

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Whoever said there is no such thing as coincidence wasn't in this quiet room this morning. The light touch of the computer keys addressing Amazon.com was the only sound. I was hoping to find a listing for a VHS or DVD video of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" for our Fourth of July entertainment.

As soon as I logged on with only that search in mind, Amazon managed to waylay my effort with temptations equaling Eve and the shiny apple: "Books we think you'll like." They base this assumption on books I've ordered in the past and today's offering was: "This is New York" by E. B. White with a new Introduction by Roger Angell. I had bought Pete Hammill's book, "My Manhattan," as well as A. E. Hotchner's "Elaine's." Amazon's assumptions were hardly a psychic reach.

The excerpt they offered to further flavor the bite of the apple was page 20 and E.

Roy Scheider

Roy Scheider, who died on February 10 aged 75, was a versatile and appealing actor who appeared in more than 70 films, including Steven Spielberg's Jaws and William Friedkin's French Connection.

Despite his theatrical background, Scheider was best known for playing a string of tough-guys in film thrillers. His weathered face, doe eyes and broken nose gave him a vulnerable air which he often exploited playing down-to-earth everymen attempting to make the best of difficult situations.
