Fall-prevention efforts offer simple steps for older adults
At 94, she has come to the fall-prevention clinic to relearn how to stay on her feet so she can still get out to the bank, the hairdresser and the corner restaurant to have lunch with her neighbor. Flodquist has fallen several times in the past decade, thanks to a small rock, a weedy parking strip and a tiny side yard, where she was washing windows with a hose while looking up and walking backward. Usually, she broke something — an ankle, elbow, wrist, leg. Then, in December, Flodquist was headed to the bus stop, carefully avoiding cracks in the street, when she failed to step high enough to clear a curb. She only bruised a thumb, but it scared her. "I have learned to look at the ground all the time," she said. Flodquist is among millions of people age 65 and older who fall every year in the U.S.

Anger at university principals’£142,000 pay raise
University principals in Scotland have been awarded salary increases of more than twice the rate of inflation despite the tight financial climate facing the sector. A survey by The Herald reveals that in 2006-07 university principals received an average salary of £162,000, a rise of 5.2% on the previous year. The increase represents an additional £142,000 taken out of the sector's annual budget. The highest paid principals are Professor Duncan Rice, from Aberdeen University, and Professor Timothy O'Shea, from Edinburgh University, who get paid £209,000. Sir Alan Langlands, from Dundee, is paid £206,000. Lecturers' representatives have criticised the rises, following a 3.5% deal for academic staff. .

Model James King praised Lhuillier for a special touch, which she said was rare among today's designers. But the world's fashion focus will be turning away from the Big Apple and on to the Big Smoke - London Fashion Week starts on Monday. .
Braves considering Kotsay or Patterson for CF?
They're talking to teams about trading highly sought-after starter Joe Blanton (only 27 years old), and yes, plenty of Braves fans would love for Atlanta to get involved in that discussion (sure can't blame you). The Braves haven't ruled out adding another starter, but I'd be shocked if they were willing to give up the young talent required to trade for Blanton. However, the Billy Beane Bazaar could hold an answer to the Braves' desire to find a veteran CF to get them through the transition period between Andruw Jones and projected future CF standout Schafer, who should be ready by 2009 opening day, and perhaps by midseason 2008. Schafer might even be ready by '08 opening day, if the Braves deem it necessary and suitable to thrust him into the starting CF role without any experience above Class A ball.
School districts finding a new way to save money: Outsource finances
Most of the day-to-day operation of the Brooklyn Center School District hums around its district offices just off Interstate 94. But the bulk of the number-crunching may be happening in Rochester, or in a home office elsewhere in the metro area. Brooklyn Center, Fridley and Columbia Heights are among a handful of smaller districts and charter schools around the state that are outsourcing all or part of their financial management to a private company, School Management Services, based in Rochester. It's a trend that may reflect a shortage of qualified school professionals, as baby boomers retire, said Sue Crockett, executive director of the Minnesota Association of School Business Professionals. And as school finance specialists become more in-demand, they become harder for small districts to attract and retain.
