Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse scored five Grammys last night: Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Song of the Year for "Rehab," Best Vocal Album and Best Pop Vocal Performance. She accepted the award live via satellite from London. Her visa request was denied but then accepted at the last minute. Amy chose to perform closer to home. Us Magazine reports:

After accepting her award, an emotional Winehouse, who was joined on stage by her dad and mom, thanked her parents, record label and "incarcerated Blake" — her husband, who has been behind bars since last last year.
"I can't believe I've won 5 awards. It's a shame I couldn't be there to accept the awards but I'm so proud and happy that I had the opportunity to perform for the Grammys in my hometown of London with my family and friends around me," she said.

Earlier 'Reader Response'

Wolfowitz got in trouble for allegedly arranging a high-ranking position at the bank for his girlfriend, and ensuring that she got a large pay raise. Wolfowitz, a conservative long supported by US President George Bush, had taken over his top post on an anti-corruption platform, so the appointment was viewed as hypocritical and violating bank regulations."

The fact is that Wolfowitz arranged the position for his girlfriend, following the guidelines approved and communicated to him by the directors of the bank. Wolfowitz only resigned after the bank recognized this fact and cleared him of any wrongdoing. After all, when a top down corrupt institution accuses their top dog of wrongdoing, whether he did or not, is irrelevant. His reputation is destroyed. That's politics, folks.

I find it excruciatingly and embarrassingly ironic that my country would criticize another nation's intelligence and anti-terrorism efforts.

Monday wild card

The way it is being staged does not fit for CdA. We agreed completely with the critique written earlier in the SR by Jim Kershner.

DFO: My daughter, who knows the star, Steve Booth, enjoyed the play. My wife wanted to walk out. And I was in the middle. It was quirky. Sometimes coarse (occasional language, orgy scene). And it had no memorable music. Coming on the heels of "Chorus Line," which was coarser, I'd say the Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre had one adult-themed play too many this summer. I want to see "Chorus Line" again. But I'll pass on "Pippin" (although Ellen Travolta was dyne-oh!-mite in the one scene as Pippin's grandma).

Jose Canseco Tries to Drag Magglio Ordonez Through the Mud But Only ...

I don't think anybody was under the impression that Jose Canseco's motives in helping to blow the steroids controversy wide open was completely altruistic. But he is going to be looked upon as a necessary catalyst in helping get this problem in the spotlight with his first book. But for those who want to look upon him as some sort of protagonist in this mess, there's this:Jose Canseco offered to keep Magglio Ordonez "clear" in his upcoming book if the Detroit Tigers outfielder invested in a movie project promoted by Canseco, The New York Times reported Wednesday night.Extortion, huh Jose? Great. So much for that Pulitzer Prize. More after the jump. The newspaper cited "a person in baseball with knowledge of the situation" in a report on its Web site and said four people in baseball, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Major League Baseball referred the matter to the FBI.Ordonez decided not to go forward with a complaint, so the FBI didn't open a formal investigation, the newspaper said.

Clinton Campaign Stung By Third-Place Finish

The rumblings of Clinton's defeat could be sensed in the past few days as a sense of momentum and swelling crowds fueled the numerous campaign events staged by Obama and Edwards as they feverishly crisscrossed the state.

A few hours before the caucusing began Thursday night, Bill and Hillary Clinton were seen striding through the Hotel Fort Des Moines with a look of consternation on their faces.

The caucuses marked the culmination of a dispiriting week for the Clintons as a series of polls presaged a possible Obama victory — so long as a projected massive turnout of young and first-time caucus-goers materialized. And so it did with an estimated 212,000 Democrats showing up to caucus, almost twice as many as in 2004.

The groundswell of Democrats responding to Obama's and Edwards' call for "hope" and "change," respectively, flooded and stalled the vaunted, fine-tuned Clinton electoral machine.

Rosacea: No laughing matter

Rosacea can manifest as anything from a blushy red face to pimples or bumps, a red nose like W.C. Fields, or eye inflammation. The bulbous red nose of the late entertainer W.C. Fields, seen above in a "David Copperfield" movie poster, has been attributed to a form of rosacea, called rhinophyma, not to his heavy-drinking lifestyle. Today, the condition can be treated with surgery. .
