At an indoor market, we're introduced to the indigenous fruit and veg: the kumara, a sort of sweet potato; bright red yams that look like witchety grubs; and golden kiwi fruit, sweeter and softer than their sharp green cousins. 'I remember going to Britain in 1988,' says Cathy, 'and thinking I didn't want to come back, because in New Zealand we had no cafes, no delis, no good food.' The most adventurous cooking came from overseas: restaurants were invariably French or Chinese. Now Wellington boasts four fine-dining restaurants that could hold their own in any metropolis.

Karibu Books started off as a kiosk specializing in books for African-Americans, but over the years transformed into something more.
It became a place where African-American authors could promote their books when mainstream stores turned them away. Some went on to become best-selling authors.
Now, after 15 years, Karibu (ka-REE-boo) is going out of business, leaving behind what some say will be a cultural void.

The public transit buses run on B20 biodiesel, a biodiesel mix. And last month, the Common Council set a goal of reducing city government's nonrenewable energy usage by 5 percent by next year. Now, Oneonta plans to have a hybrid-engine trolley in use this year, Mayor John Nader said. The trolley will be purchased using a federal transportation grant. The state Department of Transportation, which administers the grant, notified the city last week about funding totaling $555,000, of which $444,000 is federal, $55,500 is state and $55,500 is local. Of that funding, $375,000 will be for the trolley.

Ultimate Fighting's Ultimate Fight
