Scientists aglow over drug for radiation poisoning
With the Starship Enterprise seemingly doomed after losing warp power, Mr. Spock exposes himself to lethal radiation in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. After repairing the engines and saving the day, Spock dies. Evidently, the movie's writers didn't think scientists would find a drug to cure radiation poisoning by the late 23rd century. Yet local scientists may be on the verge of doing just that more than two centuries before the setting of the Star Trek film. Rice University's Jim Tour and his colleagues at two Houston health institutions have found a drug that, when given to mice before radiation exposure, is 5,000 times more effective than the best-available therapy for radiation injuries. Officials at the Department of Defense, seeking remedies for the radiation sickness that would follow a nuclear strike, were so taken by the research that they recently gave Tour a $540,000 grant and asked him to compress the next phase of testing into an almost unheard-of nine months.

The Yankees are still tops in New York, and one pitcher, no matter how great, cannot do anything to change that. Historically, the comparisons scarcely need to be made. Then again, why not have some fun. World Series Titles: 26-2. Pennants: 39-4. Division Titles: 15-2. Need I go on? The Yankees are the most successful franchise in the history of professional sports. The Mets? Eh, not so much. Still, this isn't a historical debate -- it's an exercise in who will be the "it" team in New York in 2008. This week Today and PM are broadcasting my radio reports on my Balkans trip. One of the frustrations of radio or TV is that you can find someone who has some very interesting things to say, but in the quest for balanced pieces reflecting the whole story I can only give them a half-minute or so of airtime. Here, I am not limited in that way. So, over the next few days I'll be posting four different stories about how people are reacting to the Serbian elections or the looming independence of Kosovo. They are not meant to be comprehensive or in themselves balanced: they are a snapshot. But I hope together they add up to a bigger picture. 'Chelsea can still win the title', insists Grant
'We can still win the title, it will not be easy, but we can do it and we will challenge to the end,' Grant told Sky Sports One. Many obstacles face Cards at USF
TAMPA — The defense, already thin, lost two of its best and most experienced players this week. The offense has become predictable and one-dimensional. One of the nation's top defensive players awaits. The opponent is high-quality and the site has been particularly unfriendly. Other than that, everything looks great for the University of Louisville football team (5-6, 2-3) as it takes on South Florida (7-3, 2-3) Saturday night in its bid to pull an upset and enhance its prospects for a 10th straight bowl berth. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. (ESPNU) in Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Bucs of the NFL. UofL is coming off its best all-around performance of the season, rallying from a 31-14 deficit to tie the score, then losing at West Virginia 38-31 on Nov. 9. But since then, the Cards — who traveled with only 25 healthy defensive players — have lost two more starters.
