Acne And Rosacea Getting You Down? Laser, Light And Cosmetic Treatments Give Patients A Much Needed Boost

It is estimated that approximately 50 million people in the United States alone are affected by acne vulgaris, and another 14 million Americans experience the redness, flushing and pronounced blood vessels associated with rosacea. While there are no cures for these persistent skin conditions, dermatologists are broadening their treatment options to include laser, light and cosmetic therapies that are proving effective in managing these conditions and improving patient satisfaction.

Speaking at the 66th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, dermatologist Jenny J. Kim, MD, PhD, FAAD, assistant professor of medicine and dermatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), in Los Angeles, Calif., discussed the latest approaches for treating acne, acne scarring and rosacea with laser and light therapies by themselves, in combination with each other or with cosmetic treatments, such as fillers.

Police pursue leads in Rowan student's death

Five days after the fatal beating of a Rowan University student, police continue to interview potential witnesses and obtain tips from an anonymous tipline.

A $50,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the people involved in the Saturday night attack that killed Donald "Donnie" Farrell, a 19-year-old business major from Boonton Township, Morris County.

At least four men stopped to ask Farrell for directions to a party shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday. Before he could turn to Beau Rivage, the apartment complex across Bowe Boulevard where he lived, at least one man punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground.

The teenager died Sunday from a ruptured blood vessel in his neck. The blow to his neck, either a kick or a punch, police say, ruptured the right vertebral artery, which carries blood to the brain.

Pavel Datsyuk tipped Lidstrom's shot at 14:16 of the first period, and Ryan Carter redirected Rob Niedermayer's pass at 17:49. In the second period, Schneider scored at 8:28, and Kent Huskins made it 3-1 at 15:40 when he weaved around Brian Rafalski, Johan Franzen and Brett Lebda before flipping a backhand past Osgood. Franzen scored at 6:06 of the third.

"We knew that it would be an intense game, and we knew that it would be close," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said.

"You get one break or one bounce and it's the difference in the game."

Donna Karan's Urban Zen

This includes, books, jewellery, artwork, essential oils and music, sourced from around the globe and housed not in a glossy, superbrand emporium, but in an understated, raw concrete space.

A percentage of all sales funds Karan’s most recent initiative, also called Urban Zen, founded with her partner-in-zen, Sonja Nuttall.

Karan says that the initiative was born out of frustration that so much was missing from traditional Western practices of medicine. While powerful science and pharmaceuticals are of course vital in curing disease, Karan noticed there was a distinct lack of healing of the heart and the spirit. ‘We must treat the patient with the same passions with which we fight the disease,’ Karan insists.

Her vigour in spreading this message has included not only setting up seminars and training staff but she has converted her husband’s studio into a well-being centre and retail outlet with personally selected products including clothing, jewellery, home furnishings, CDs, books, perfumes and art where a percentage of the proceeds all go towards the project.

Study Finds Smoking Causes Acne

Before you light up your next cigarette, a new study shows nicotine may have yet another hidden danger, especially for women. Local 12 Medical Reporter Liz Bonis explains in today's Health Alert. Not that you need another reason to quit, but this study found that smoking has been linked to serious problems with your skin. We stopped out in Western Hills today at Queen City Physicians to tell you more about this research. It is published in the British Journal of Dermatology. Scientists found women who smoke are four times more likely to develop non-inflammatory acne as non-smokers. This can cause blocked pores, large whiteheads and even small cysts. Women may be more at risk for this than guys who smoke, researchers say, because of fluctuating hormones. The nicotine makes this worse because it constricts blood vessels, and reduces the supply of oxygen to the skin which is needed for new cells. If you are having skin problems, make sure you see your own dermatologist.
